At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, seeing that it’s business volume could drop due to many customers suspending activities, Instukem switched to innovation mode. The company quickly developed an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that met Canadian requirements. “It was a matter of survival for both our business and our employees,” recalled David Lapointe, Engineer and Co-President of this family business, launched 40 years ago. “We specialize in cleaning products. So we were very well positioned in this market. We immediately seized the opportunity!”
Compliance with Canadian standards
PURIFIK hand sanitizer was developed in record time. Tests were conducted in the Instukem laboratory until the final product was formulated, then the production chain was reorganized and bottling equipment modified. “We’re accustomed to making industrial and commercial soaps,” continued Patrick Lapointe, Co-President of Instukem. But in this case, we were facing a big hurdle, because we quickly had to manufacture a sanitizer that met Health Canada standards. We had to implement all the quality control measures necessary to comply with these standards. The fact that our company was already ISO 9001:2015 certified was a big help.”
PURIFIK, a 100% Quebec-made product
Developed by the Instukem laboratory, experienced and well known in the disinfectant field, PURIFIK is a 100% Quebec-made product, created and manufactured in Montreal. The company came up with its own formula, containing alcohol purified to 70% v/v, and using top-quality ingredients. “Even though PURIFIK is new on the market, we have already delivered truckloads to our customers. Demand is very high,” said Patrick.
Proud of this success, Instukem now plans to develop this new niche, integrating its hand sanitizer into its product line, while continuing to improve it. “We are working on various fragrances and will test different textures,” explained David. We continue to monitor what is happening in the market and to listen to customer requests. The concept is really moving forward!”
